Starting this weekend, Climate Week is upon New York with a multitude of events. While there are over 400 events taking place, I’m here to highlight the fashion-focused ones that are open to the public so you can attend and learn too! Not in New York? Worry not, some of these events will also be held online, making them accessible to everyone.
Saturday & Sunday, 9.16.23-9.17.23
Circular Fashion Playground. In-person- A two-day event that explores how to adapt circular fashion into our lives. The ‘playground’ will include a clothing swap, lessons in mending, repair services, panel discussions on circular fashion, performances, a vintage pop-up, and clothing upcycling. 7pm Fashion and Climate Panel. In-person and live-streamed- Tune into a panel discussion to learn about how the fashion industry is innovating to shape the future of how we think about sustainability, waste, and the climate crisis. Hosted by Thousand Fell, stay tuned for registration.

1pm Fashion Climate Advocates: The Era of Collective Action. In-person- at Nest Climate Campus- Seasoned industry experts issue a compelling call to action for individuals and organizations alike. 1:45pm The Beauty of ESG: A Fireside Chat on How to Integrate ESG into Beauty and Personal Care. In-person at Nest Climate Campus- Topics to be covered include emissions calculations, certification and claims, packaging, ingredients, transportation, waste management, resource management, communication, and social investments. 2:30pm Tech Taking the Lead: The Product Innovations Driving Conscious Consumption and a More Circular Future. In-person at Nest Climate Campus- Only 9% of the world economy is circular, and with global retail sales projected to exceed 31.7 trillion U.S. dollars by 2025, it's crucial to explore how technology can help bridge this gap within the retail sector by enabling consumers to embrace more conscious shopping practices. 4pm Fossil Fashion: Are We Wearing Oil? In person at the Morgan Library- The discussion will highlight the need to eradicate fossil fuels from the fashion industry and call for prompt, radical legislative action to drive systemic change. The Campaign will also launch a policy recommendation to systematically address overproduction, overconsumption, and underutilization while decoupling the industry from finite fossil fuels. 10am Beyond Decarbonization: The Fashion Industry needs an equitable and rapid transition that avoids false solutions. Webinar- Panelists representing human rights, biodiversity, and the climate movement discuss how brands have a responsibility to take action when the status quo continues to inflict dangerous harm on people and the planet. 9pm Earth Disco. In-person- So this is not exactly a fashion-focused event but it sounds like a lot of fun AND a good opportunity to wear vintage or secondhand disco-inspired and dance with other people who love the planet as much as you do.
Performers include Hilla the Earth, a Brooklyn-based eco-rapper, comedian, and dedicated climate activist, and Eric Terena an Indigenous Brazilian climate activist, non-profit founder, and DJ extraordinaire. Register here.
