Thank you to everyone for reading and joining the Something Borrowed, Never New community over the last year! I am so grateful! I am already looking forward to 2024, focusing on how to develop your personal secondhand and sustainable style and how to take care of our clothes to mend and repair because loved clothes last (stay tuned for more on this!)
With 2023 coming to an end, New Year’s Eve is potentially the last dressing-up occasion for the year. I’m currently in Colorado as bundled up as can be until then. Instead of rushing to order something new to wear, consider the occasion as a time to borrow or rent festive attire. While something about New Year’s Eve brings out the desire to dress up like a disco ball, it is estimated that 7 million sequinned garments will end up in landfills this festive season. According to ByRotation, if everyone rented their sequin look this Winter, it would save the equivalent of 2 Olympic-sized swimming pools filled with sequins (ie tiny pieces of plastic), from going to a landfill.
There are a handful of platforms for monthly memberships for clothing rentals like Rent the Runway and Nuuly, however, I find the offerings on peer-to-peer borrowing sites more aligned with my style and more suited for one-off occasions. How does peer-to-peer borrowing work? You pay to borrow pieces directly from someone’s closet, you can also make money by lending out your clothes too. It operates on a shared economy model and there are a handful of platforms (listed below), that connect the borrowers and lenders.
Peer-to-Peer Borrow Platforms:
I find Tulerie best for higher-end designer pieces with a small mix of contemporary. It’s great for designer pieces I want to wear but wouldn’t pay full price for an one-off wear like this Johanna Ortiz dress.
Mention me (Hilliary) for $25 off your first borrow
I like ByRotation for a more contemporary mixture of brands and a smaller price point to borrow. This Summer I borrowed a week of outfits for Portugal.
Use this link for $35 off your first borrow. They also have a NYE edit here,
If in NYC, they just opened an irl storefront you can go rent the same day, you can also do same day delivery in NYC.
Other Rental Serivces:
Rental and resale service exclusively serving petite women, 5’4’’ and below
Use code RentHL for $15 off your first rental
Best for eveningwear, They have a showroom in TriBeCa to try on before renting
This is one of the monthly rental platforms I do like since with your monthly membership you can swap out different designer bags.
I borrowed the Paco Rabanne chainmail skirt from Tulerie, then styled it with pieces from my closest to inspire some different NYE
I want to hear from you! What do you want to read about in 2024? What clothing items do you want secondhand, vintage or more sustainable options for? I’m all ears!
